My top 5 tips for starting on the right path to feeling your best and creating a spectacular 2015!

unknown

Wow, 2015!!! Does anyone else start singing the Talking Heads song, “Once in a Lifetime” when they think about what year it is? “And you may ask yourself – Well…How did I get here?” As much as I enjoy listening to the Talking Heads in my brain, the more important question is “Where are we going?” 2015 holds all kinds of possibilities for you this year – so what are they? What do you want to achieve this year? Whether the answer has to do with work, family, travel, or personal goals, to achieve all that you want to this year, you need to feel your best!

Here are my top 5 tips for starting on the right path to feeling your best and creating a spectacular 2015!

1.BREATHE!!!!!!! Slow down and start breathing correctly. Spend a few minutes every day focusing on your breath – inhale for 4 seconds, filling your belly a full 360 degrees with air (yes, you have to feel like you have a balloon in your belly), hold for 7 seconds and then exhale for 8 seconds. You can even place your hands right above your hips with 2 fingers in front and your thumb on your back to fill the expansion in your belly. Make sure you expand front and back!

2. SLEEP!!!!!!! I do not care how much you have on your plate, DO NOT COMPROMISE ON YOUR SLEEP!!!!! Try going to bed at the same time and getting up at the same time daily.

3. GET RID OF ALL PROCESSED FOODS IN YOUR PANTRY!!!!! Yes, I know it is difficult, but just focusing on eating as much fresh, organic, whole food as you can every day will do wonders for your body.

4. MOVE!!!!!!! I don’t care whether you exercise for an hour a day or not, but I do care if you move your body regularly! Please, move every day – take the stairs, do some jumping jacks, race your kids up the stairs in your house or up the driveway, park farther away from your destination, commit to doing as many errands by foot or bike as you can, etc. Just carrying two bags of heavy groceries to your car instead of pushing the shopping cart all the way to your car counts for something!

5. HYDRATE!!!!! Start with a glass of lemon water in the morning when you rise and keep drinking water all day. Carry a reusable water bottle with you in the car, in your work bag, wherever you go and drink up! If you do not like plain water, slice some lemon and cucumbers into your water, add a little mint, play around with what makes it more tasty for you. But there is NO SUBSTITUTION for water!

One more thing. Remember when you were in high school and you had that one pair of jeans that you would put on and instantly you knew whether your weight had crept up or not? I had this conversation with a client the other day, how in the age of lycra and wearing yoga pants all day long for months, it is easy to gain 10+ pounds without ever realizing it is happening. We all need accountability, so find that one pair of jeans or slim fitting dress to hold you accountable. No need to stress if they get a little tight, just get back to the basics when they do – breathe, sleep, eat a diet rich in whole foods (no processed), move, and hydrate!
