Your Habits Become Your Anatomy

Happy Cinco de Mayo!!!  I hope you are all enjoying your weekend!!  The countdown to Summer is on and we only have 5 1/2 weeks until school is out and summer break is here.  Are you ready for summer???
I get asked many questions about exercise, diet and lifestyle choices and the one common thread seems to be that everyone is still looking for the quick weight loss fix instead of keeping the focus on making sustainable changes that will improve overall health.  I have said it many many times, but understanding this one statement is the KEY to understanding what is happening with your body:  YOUR HABITS BECOME YOUR ANATOMY!!!!  Think about it, do you snack all day long instead of eating 2-3 meals and 1-2 small snacks, do you drink mostly water, unsweetened tea, and a little coffee or do you drink sodas and diet sodas, juice, vitamin waters, etc.  Do you exercise 4-6 days a week consistently, or do you exercise more randomly?  Do you sit slumped in a chair at a computer all day or do you sit on a stability ball so your back is straight, your abs are stabilized and shoulders are pulled back?  Your body will adapt to your habits and change accordingly.  If you work the same muscles over and over everyday, your body will make adaptations to those muscles.  If you run every day, your body will make adaptations for the amount of calories you are burning and the muscles you are using.
Even the amount of chemicals we are ingesting impacts our health and anatomy (for more on this read http://www.ptonthenet.com/articles/obesogens-the-effect-of-toxins-on-fat-loss-3765).  Do you try to each as much organic food as possible, at least sticking to buying organic only for the “dirty dozen”??  If you would like to know more about the dirt dozen, here is a list of the most and least contaminated produce:
Don’t get me wrong, I am all about living life with moderation and enjoying each and every day.  I don’t think you need to go to extremes to be healthy, but I do think you need to take a good, honest look at your lifestyle and the habits you live by and figure out if they are getting in the way of looking and feeling your best.  If so, let’s work on changing them a little at a time.
